Is it Time to Install a New Lockset?

Not only are locksets important for your security, they also add an attractive and stylish finish to the front door of your home. There are, however, many valid reasons to consider replacing them.

Wear and Tear
Your first line of defense against unwanted intruders is a properly locked door. If your lockset has become worn or rusted, this presents a serious weakness in your home security. Old and worn out locks are easier to pick and break. They are also more difficult to open legitimately over time. Inspect your lockset often for signs of wear. If it shows signs of severe tarnish or rust, then you may want to consider replacing it in the near future. If it is becoming increasingly difficult to open with the key, then it should be replaced immediately to avoid the inconvenience of being locked out.

Robbery
Have you had a recent break-in? If so, then you should replace your locks. If the door was forced open, the integrity of the lockset's mechanics would most likely be compromised. It would also be wise to assume at that point that the keys may have fallen into the wrong hands, and as a result, any locks that use the same keys should be replaced as well.

Lost Keys
If your keys were lost, or even stolen, then you should replace all of the locks they are associated with. Your first step would be to figure out which keys have been lost and then replace the locks in order of security priority. For example, outer locks that would give an intruder access should be replaced as soon as possible, followed by the inner locks based on your own personal security priorities.

Moving in?
If you have recently moved into a new home, it is a good idea to have a fresh start with all new outer locksets. Additionally, if you have tenants, it may be a good idea to replace the locks or even consider the cost-effective idea of re-keying locksets when they move out. Though your last tenant may have been kind and courteous, you can't be sure they didn't make a backup copy. They may not even remember having given a copy of their key to a neighbor or friend in the past.
